Last week, Mike Pompeo became Secretary of State. Joining newly-minted national security advisor John Bolton, both appointees are likely to push for military solutions over diplomacy and round out President Trump’s new, and dangerous, war cabinet.
President Trump has already launched missile strikes against Syria without permission from Congress. And given past comments from Bolton and Pompeo as well as President Trump’s erratic behavior, many Americans are left worried that he’ll attack Iran or North Korea next.
So how do we pump the brakes? How do we make sure our president doesn’t lead us into an unnecessary war?
It’s somethingTimhas been working on for years:congressional authorization of military force. The Constitution gives Congress - not the President - the authority to declare war. That means the President must come to Congress when deploying U.S. troops to new countries across the globe or making a decision on whether to strike another nation. Yet if we don’t act now, President Trump will continue operating as if he can use military force whenever and wherever, completely unchecked.
TimKainehas worked across the aisle with Senator Corker to negotiate and introduce a new military authorization to accomplish these goals.
Pushing for measures that reinstate congressional approval could make a HUGE difference in the coming month.
Timsupported stronger congressional authority even before President Trump was in the Oval Office, but now he knows it is more important than ever that Congress has the ability to check the executive branch when it comes to waging war.
He will continue to fight for measures that limit the president’s ability to use military force in place of diplomacy, but he can only be successful if we all continue to speak out against abuses of power.
We need to send a message to the White House: you cannot wage any war, anywhere, any time, just because you want to. The American people and their representatives have a right to know what is going on.
As the conversation continues,Timwill continue to push hard to raise our voices and safeguard our future.
